Richard Kennel, Ph.D., of Associated Psychologists in Terre Haute, was recently appointed as the new coordinator of the American Psychological Association’s Disaster Response Network for the state of Indiana.

DRN is a nationwide association of licensed psychologists specially trained to respond to mental health issues following natural or man-made disasters. Over the last 20 years, the APA has had a memorandum of understanding with American Red Cross to provide mental health services in areas affected by disasters. All DRN members take Red Cross Disaster Mental Health classes and work under the auspices of the American Red Cross while deployed on a disaster relief operation.

In his role as state coordinator, Kennel will be responsible for recruiting volunteer psychologists and facilitating Red Cross Disaster Mental Health training for all volunteers. Kennel currently serves as a Disaster Mental Health volunteer with the Red Cross Wabash Valley Chapter Disaster Action Team. He has also been deployed at the national level, serving in Montana last summer in response to the devastating wildfires.
