Rex brand coffee now available at Baesler’s

TERRE HAUTE — Clabber Girl Corp.’s Rex Roasting Company announced that Rex Coffee is available at Baesler’s Market.

“It is really great having the opportunity to partner with Baesler’s at this stage of Rex Roasting Company,” said Joe Burch, director of the Culinary Division at Clabber Girl. “My vision has always been to offer small-batch, artisan-roasted coffee at the highest quality possible to this community. I can’t imagine a better way to begin to build the coffee culture in Terre Haute than to have such a well-respected partner.”

The small-batch, artisan-roasted Rex brand coffee has a rich history in Terre Haute, and it is the only coffee roasted locally. The quality and full flavor is assured through the hand-roasting of small batches of beans which are then visually inspected by master roasters and cooled by air, not water. Baesler’s will carry three varieties of the whole bean Rex brand — Original Roast, Decaffeinated, and the Double X, deep roasted blend.

“I was able to experience firsthand the artistry behind the Rex brand coffee,” said Baesler’s owner, Bob Baesler. “After the beans were roasted, I participated in a formal coffee ‘cupping,’ where a sampling of beans is ground and brewed to check for proper flavor. We sat down and tasted each variety of coffee that we will offer in the store.”

The history of Rex coffee dates back to 1879, when Herman Hulman traveled from his local grocery wholesale business to New York City to purchase his first coffee roaster from Jabez Burns & Sons. This is the same roaster that is now on display in the museum, bordering the viewing window of the new Rex Roasting Company exhibition-style roasting facility.

Patented in 1905, the “Imperial blend, fit for a Monarch” was roasted and packed using the latest technology of the period, “fresh from the toasting ovens, into modern vacuum packed cans.” It was coffee roasting, spice milling, and wholesale grocery distribution that spawned the Clabber Girl Baking Powder business.

Today’s Rex Coffee is roasted by Roast Master Chris Weber, formerly of PT’s Coffee in Topeka, Kan. During his stint as the roaster for PT’s Coffee, the company was recognized as the “2009 Roasting Company of the Year” by the Specialty Coffee Association of America, and Weber was a finalist in the Mid-West Barista Championship competition.

“Our partnership with Baesler’s will emphasize our commitment to high-quality, fresh coffee,” Weber said. “Fresh roasted coffee is at its peak flavor and aroma in the first 10 days after roasting. It is our intention to keep Rex Coffee readily available at Baesler’s Market. We will be rotating our coffee every seven to 10 days to keep the freshest roast on the shelves and to ensure that Baesler’s customers receive the best Rex Coffee experience possible.”
