Milestones: June 23, 2009

Thomas D. Matteson, formerly of Hymera, has retired after 50 years in the pre-engineered metal building business. After spending four years in the U.S. Navy, Tom returned to the area to begin his long career in that field. He spent three years with Stran Steel Corporation in Terre Haute before moving to Houston with Stran for another four years. He then moved to Raleigh, N.C., as district manager for the Mid- East States for 12 more years with Stran.

He spent the next 18 years as district and then senior regional manager for Gulf States Manufactures and four years as district manager with Nucor Corporation. Matteson finished his career with nine years as sales development manager with W.S. Construction in Providence, N.C. He remains on the board of directors of MBCEA. Tom and his wife, the former Ada Mae Hixon, are graduates of Hymera High School. Tom, Ada, son Allan and granddaughter Ashley reside at Ashley Hill, their home in Halifax County, Va.
