TERRE HAUTE — After nearly two decades, no bicycles are for sale on the northwest corner of Seventh and Springhill in Terre Haute.
Terre Haute Cycling and Fitness, previously Gilles Cycling and Fitness, closed operations early this year due to slumping sales in a slow economy, the former owner said.
“It’s just that the economy was so bad,” said Greg Barkley, 37, recent owner of Terre Haute Cycling and Fitness. Sales started falling in the last half of 2008 and remained slow until the business closed, he said. “Everything just went downhill.”
Prior to becoming Gilles Cycling, the bike shop at 4425 S. Seventh St. was known as Terre Haute Schwinn and Fitness.
Terre Haute Cycling and Fitness carried Schwinn bikes for a while but soon dropped that brand and specialized in Trek, another well-known maker of bicycles, Barkley said.
The former bike shop sold high-quality mountain, racing and casual bicycles, Barkley said. His shop also offered commercial and home fitness supplies, skateboards and bike repair. Prices ranged from $239 to about $5,000 per bike, he said.
“I’ll miss it,” Barkley said of the business, which he purchased from Gilles in 2001. “I’ll miss the people there and everything.”
Local athletes may miss Terre Haute Cycling and Fitness. The business was a sponsor of the Terre Haute Triathlon and an area biking team, Barkley said.
Barkley, a native of the Champaign, Ill., area, is returning to his roots. Prior to joining Gilles Cycling as a manager in 1996, he worked in Champaign at Durst Cycle and Fitness. He’ll start working again for Durst on Monday, Barkley said.
