Union Hospital receives Hospital of Choice honor

The Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE — Union Hospital was honored for the second year in a row with an AAHCP Hospital of Choice Award for the winter quarter of 2010 in Category III (hospitals with more than 300 but less than 500 licensed beds). Only 10 hospitals across the nation received the award in this category, with Union Hospital being the only recipient in Indiana.

The award is designed to find the country’s most consumer-friendly hospitals.

“We are pleased to receive this recognition for our service and compassionate care of our patients,” said Union Hospital President and CEO David Doerr. “Our commitment to the highest quality of care reflects the dedication of our skilled team of physicians, nurses, staff and volunteers. They make Union Hospital the best choice for healthcare.”

After examining more than 400 hospitals a year, the AAHCP selects approximately 100 annually to receive the Hospital of Choice Award. The selection process is designed so that only the very best facilities can be accepted, and applications are extended only to hospitals that pass a preliminary screening process. Applications are then reviewed in six principal areas of consideration including:

• standards of conduct;

• performance management and improvement;

• staff development and training;

• systems of communication;

• good citizenship; and

• educational and promotional material available to consumers.

As a Hospital of Choice Award recipient, Union will be recognized online for one year at www.choicehospitals.com.

Headquartered in Alexandria, Va., AAHCP recognized the first hospitals with the Hospital of Choice Award in 2002. The AAHCP created the award program to acknowledge those hospitals that go beyond their wall in pursuit of excellence and quality care hospitals that have developed a collaborative relationship with physicians and healthcare organizations in the community as well as managed care organizations and other payers.
