Pace Community Action Agency is one of six nationally that has received the 2012 Community Economic Development Entrepreneurship and Innovation Award from the Community Action Partnership.
The six winning agencies, who were recently honored at the Partnership’s 2012 Annual Convention in New York, are part of a national network that provides services and programs to local low-income people and families.
Since its inception in 2010, the award showcases agencies that spearhead and manage outstanding community development projects as a focal point for promoting economic security and reducing poverty. There are six categories: Community Revitalization and Investment, Energy Efficiency and Sustainability, Entrepreneurship, Real Estate Development, Protégé, and Master Innovator.
“The impact of these innovative programs is significant as they are helping to build strong, economically stable communities even as the impact of the recession lingers,” said Stacy Flowers, the Partnership’s director of Community Economic Development. “They are truly an example of how Community Action helps people and changes lives.”
PACE was selected as a winner in the Protégé category for its Ivy Lane and Crossroads Neighborhood Project. The Ivy Lane project involved the use of tax credits to develop a four building, 31 unit energy efficient high quality apartment complex. Pace’s Ivy Lane development includes one, two and three bedroom units that are all equipped with front loading washers and dryers, energy star appliances, walk-in closets and private patios or balconies. The complex includes additional amenities such as a playground, basketball court and exercise room.
Crossroads Neighborhood Project resulted from a $1,326,489 Neighborhood Stabilization Program award from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority. During this project 13 abandoned, blighted or foreclosed properties have been demolished. Four single-family homes and two duplexes also have been built.
“These projects have been extremely instrumental in helping vulnerable people in our community achieve financial stability and improve their lives,” said Bertha Proctor, Pace CEO. “We are proud of our initiative because it is truly making a difference in Knox County, and that is crucial as many of our neighbors are still feeling the impact of the weak economy.”
The Entrepreneurship and Innovation Award is part of the Partnership’s Community Economic Development Exemplary Practice Initiative, funded by the federal Office of Community Services/Administration for Children and Families/U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Pace Community Action Agency, Inc. is a private not-for-profit Community Action Agency primarily serving Knox, Sullivan, Daviess , and Greene counties established to provide support services to improve the community and encourage self-reliance.

Local chef Jeff Ford and sous Chef Greta Davis of J. Ford’s Black Angus joined 32 other chefs plus vintners, brewers and Indiana food producers at the Dig-IN Taste of Indiana event on Aug. 26 at White River State Park in Indianapolis.
Dig-IN is a cooperative effort between Indiana farmers and Indiana chefs to promote “From Farm to Fork.” The goal is to educate guests of the event about all of the produce and proteins that Indiana offers. Dig-IN demonstrates that investment in Indiana food and agriculture, through education, experiences and conversation, benefits the state’s communities and economy.
The organization provides educational resources for agricultural, culinary arts and local food sectors in Indiana. Relatively few citizens know that Indiana is the largest producer of duck, mint, popcorn and melon in the U.S. For the event, Ford and Davis made a slow braised bison taco with local corn, heirloom tomato and watercress pico de gallo and served it with Capriole Farms’ goat cheese lime slaw and jalapeno havarti cheese from Fair Oaks Farm in LaPorte. The bison came from Bison World in Noblesville. The J. Ford’s Black Angus booth was popular with estimates of more than 2,800 tacos, including 200 pounds of bison, distributed.
The third annual Dig-IN sold out with the sale of 5,000 tickets.
