Schnitker, Booe no longer on ISU basketball team

Indiana State men’s basketball guard Tyson Schnitker confirmed to the Tribune-Star that he will be leaving the men’s basketball program effective immediately.

“I told Coach [Royce] Waltman I was transferring this morning,” said Schnitker in a telephone interview Thursday evening. “I wanted to have fun playing basketball again, it became more of a job here. I think I’ve made the right decision for myself. I want to be happy playing basketball again, and I wasn’t happy anymore.”

Waltman wished Schnitker the best in his basketball future.

“I’m sorry to see him go, he’s been a good teammate for us. He just feels he’s been through some tough seasons. He feels a change of scenery would help him,” said Waltman, who also confirmed that Elliott Booe is not presently on the roster for next season.

Waltman also noted every other player who is slated to return has indicated that they will do so next season.

Schnitker doesn’t have any solid plans as to where he would transfer to. He mentioned a desire to possibly go to the University of Southern Indiana, where his Robinson High School teammate — Nick Brooks — transferred to from Butler after last season.

If Schnitker transferred to a Division I program, he would have to sit out a year. There are no such restrictions on a transfer to a lower level. USI is a Division II school.

Schnitker, who would have been a senior next season, started 77 of his 81 games in three seasons for the Sycamores at either guard spot. He averaged 10.7 points per game last season, the second-highest average behind David Moss.

Schnitker averaged 7.8 points and was a 34.4 percent 3-point shooter during his career.

Schnitker’s most memorable moment arguably came during his final season. He hit a 27-foot jumper at the buzzer to help ISU beat Butler 59-58 at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Dec. 17. At the time, it helped ISU to a 6-0 record. Schnitker also scored 19 points in ISU’s 72-65 win over Indiana on Dec. 6. He scored a career-high 24 points in an ISU win at Southern Illinois on Feb. 1.

Schnitker’s absence would leave a presumed hole at the shooting guard spot, though senior-to-be Eric Gray could return to the role he had prior to this season. Sophomore-to-be Jeremiah Wise and senior-to-be Russell Trudeau could also earn time there. Incoming freshmen Cole Holmstrom and Norman Wells, though neither would be a perfect fit, could also conceivably play in that spot.

Schnitker and Booe’s departures leave two scholarships open for next season.
