August trial date in fatal Mecca alcohol-related crash

MECCA — An August trial date has been set for a Mecca man charged with causing death and serious bodily injury while driving drunk on June 28.

Michael R. Collom, 38, will next appear in court Aug. 18 for a pre-trial conference in Parke Circuit Court. His case is set for trial Aug. 30.

Collom, who was Mecca Fire Chief at the time of the accident, has been charged with causing death when driving with an alcohol content of .08 percent or more, a class-C felony, and causing serious bodily injuiry when driving with an alcohol content of 0.08 percent or more, a class-D felony. Collom's status with the Mecca Fire Department is not currently known.

Those charges stem from the death of Stacey Williamson, 43, and the injury of his wife, Mary Williamson, 46.

Mary Williamson was listed in good condition today at I.U. Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Collom was arrested following the early morning crash that resulted in his 2006 Ford Mustang striking an embankment and going airborne, crashing through the Williamsons’ home. The point of impact was the couple’s bedroom, where both were in bed sleeping. The car came to rest in the home’s kitchen.

Collom posted bail and has been released from the Parke County Jail. He has hired attorney Michael Stites to present his defense.

A class-C felony carries a potential sentence of 2 to 8 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine. A class-D felony has a sentencing range of 6 months to 3 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.
