INDIANAPOLIS —
Numerous state agencies are preparing to respond to the winter storm that forecasters expect could dump up to 18 inches of snow in northwestern Indiana and an inch or more of ice in the state’s midsection.
Gov. Mitch Daniels today directed the state Department of Homeland Security to coordinate preparations for the storm, which was expected to move into the state tonight. The governor’s office says meetings were being conducted with utility companies, local emergency agencies, the state highway department and National Guard.
State highway department districts in northern and central Indiana plan to have trucks constantly on the road, with front-end loaders in typical high-drift areas in northern Indiana.
Some state police post commanders also canceled days off to have more troopers working Tuesday and Wednesday.
