Dario Franchitti wins rain-shortened Indy 500

INDIANAPOLIS — Dario Franchitti won the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday when rain stopped the race after 415 miles. Scott Dixon was second, and pole-winner Helio Castroneves was third. Tony Kanaan, who led the race after a rain delay of about three hours, dropped to 12th after a pit stop and a near-collision with Jaques Lazier, who hit the wall in front of him. Kanaan had worked his way to the front again before a crash by Marty Roth. Kanaan and teammate Danica Patrick quickly headed back to the pits again for what they hoped would be their final stops before the end of the race. That gave the lead to Franchitti. Just after the restart, Lazier hit the wall, and Kanaan spun his car sideways to avoid Lazier. Shortly after that, another crash took out Marco Andretti. Then, the rain started falling again, ending the race after 166 of the scheduled 200 laps.
