BREAKING: City employee withdraws from caucus consideration

Jackson was one of three candidates looking to fill City Council vacancy

TERRE HAUTE — City employee Marcia Jackson today withdrew from consideration to serve the rest of deceased Terre Haute City Councilman Chuck Miles’ term.

Jackson, who is assistant to the mayor, issued a letter to the Democrat caucus members requesting to be withdrawn, said Joe Etling, chairman of the Vigo County Democratic Party.

A caucus is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. today at the Vigo County Annex to determine the candidate to fill the 6th district council seat, which was vacated when Miles died April 18.

Sharon Miles, Chuck Miles' widow, and Dan Lockard, who is running against Chuck Miles in the Democratic primary, are now the candidates for consideration.

Lockard said during an interview Monday that he would reconsider his candidacy if Sharon Miles wanted to finish her husband’s term, which runs through the end of the year.

Jackson declined to comment when approached by a Tribune-Star reporter today at her workplace in City Hall. She referred the reporter to city communications director Peter Ciancone.

Ciancone said that he normally doesn’t comment on political issues such as Jackson’s candidacy, but added that Jackson had told him that she would write a letter to withdraw from consideration.

Etling confirmed the letter.

She indicated that, “out of love and respect for” Chuck and Sharon Miles, she requested to be withdrawn from consideration, Etling said.
