NEW: ISU hopes to name new men's basketball coach by Friday

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State Director of Athletics Ron Prettyman said Wednesday afternoon that ISU can expect to hire its next men’s basketball coach as early as Friday.

The final interview of the finalists for the job was finished on Wednesday morning.

Prettyman did not reveal who the coach will be. He is considering the interviews of the three finalists — ISU assistant Greg Lansing, Creighton assistant Kevin McKenna and Western Kentucky assistant Jeff Strohm — and expects to make a recommendation to ISU President Lloyd Benjamin and ISU Vice President of Student Affairs Tom Ramey on Thursday.

“As soon as I get the thumbs up [from Benjamin and Ramey], I will be in contact with the candidate. He’ll come to campus, meet with the President and we’ll iron out contract details. After that, he’ll meet with the team and we’ll call a press conference,” Prettyman said.

Prettyman hopes to have everything done by Friday, but noted that logistics may not allow an announcement to be made until early next week. Many assistant coaches attend the Final Four, where the National Association of Basketball Coaches meeting takes place, so it could make the chosen candidate unavailable on Friday.

Another finalist, Indiana assistant Ray McCallum, removed his name from consideration on Tuesday. Prettyman said no other candidates will be considered at this time.

The final round of interviews consisted of meetings with faculty, academic advisors and university administrators.

“Essentially, I wanted [ISU’s representatives] to get to know the candidates and be comfortable with them. If they presented any red flags as far as the candidates were concerned, it would give the candidates a chance to respond it. But nothing like that happened.”

Prettyman was asked if there was any consensus among the faculty or administration representatives who should be hired.

“There wasn’t any [consensus], and I didn’t ask for it. I let it be known that I’d be making the decision with the input of the Vice President and President,” Prettyman said.

It has been 25 days since ISU announced publicly that Royce Waltman would not be retained.
