Indiana State women not extended WNIT invitation

TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana State women’s basketball team was not extended an invitation to the WNIT. The Sycamores won eight of their last 10 games, but the season ended for ISU with a 69-65 loss to sixth-seeded Creighton in the quarterfinal round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.

Indiana State guard Leah Phillips said Monday that she and her Sycamores’ teammates were hoping their season would continue. “Yeah, we all want to play in the WNIT,” she said. “The main thing is we didn’t want the season to end how we ended it. The way that we were playing. We were playing so well together ... we’re going to have that bitter taste in our mouth [from the loss to Creighton] for postseason workouts and all of summer conditioning.”

• Indiana State had received a bid to the WNIT for the last two years and also in 2002-03 under coach Jim Wiedie.

• In 2005, Indiana State topped Illinois for its first postseason WNIT victory. The Sycamores lost to Xavier 79-70 at home in the second round.

• ISU defeated Eastern Michigan in last season's first-round game in Hulman Center, and the Sycamores lost to IU in Hulman Center in the following game.
