Wurtz repeats on first team, Arnold placed on second team

ST. LOUIS — Seniors Jamaal Tatum of Southern Illinois and Anthony Tolliver of Creighton highlight a list of 15 student-athletes honored as part of the 2007 MVC Scholar-Athlete Teams, announced today by the league office. Tatum carries a 3.64 cumulative grade point average in speech communications while Tolliver has a 3.53 cumulative GPA in finance. Voting for the 2007 MVC Scholar-Athlete Team was conducted by league’s sports information directors. Tatum and Tolliver were the only two listed on every ballot and today were named to ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA Academic All-America Team's second-team unit.

Tatum, Tolliver, and Indiana State’s Trent Wurtz are repeat first-team MVC Scholar-Athlete selections, and they are joined on the first-team unit by Evansville’s Kyle Anslinger and Jason Holsinger, and Bryan Mullins of Southern Illinois. Anslinger was an honorable mention selection in 2006, while this year marks the first league academic honor for both Holsinger and Mullins.

Two seniors are on the second-team MVC Scholar-Athlete team, including Brooks McKowen and Grant Stout of UNI. They are joined on the second-team unit by juniors Jeremy Crouch of Bradley, Adam Emmenecker of Drake, and Pierce Hibma of Creighton, while In his first year to be eligible for academic conference honors, sophomore Adam Arnold of Indiana State also made the second team.

The criteria for the Missouri Valley Conference’s Scholar-Athlete Team voting parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.00 cumulative grade-point average (4.0 scale). Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen were not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
