Bell, renowned veterinarian, spent 20 years on Vigo County School Board

TERRE HAUTE — Iverson C. Bell was called “one of the most contributing members of our community” by the late Mayor P. Pete Chalos in 1984.

Bell spent more than 30 years working as a veterinarian and a civic leader for the city.

Born Oct. 12, 1916, in DeKalb, Texas, Bell attended elementary and secondary school and junior college in

Kansas City, Kan.

In 1949, Bell graduated from Michigan State University School of Veterinary Medicine. He taught in the Veterinary School at Tuskegee Institute from 1949-50, leaving to practice in Terre Haute.

Bell served as a 20-year-member of the Vigo County School Board, including several terms as president. He also served as vice president of the Vigo County Library Board.

He co-founded, with Charlotte Caldwell, the Foundation for Public Education.

Caldwell, on the death of Bell on May 22, 1984, called him “a great man, a good man, a gentleman – a rare breed.”

Bell had been active professionally at every level, serving two terms as vice president of the American Veterinary Medical Association and as a member of the judicial council and the executive board committee on constitution and bylaws of that organization.

He was named president-elect of the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association in 1981 and became president of the association the following year. Bell also was on the board of directors of the IVMA and served as its chairman in 1979.

Bell was an officer with the Indiana School Boards Association, first as chairman of Region 7 and in 1970-71 as state president.

He was appointed by Gov. Edgar Whitcomb to the Region 6 Advisory Board for Criminal Justice Planning, was vice president of the Housing Authority for Terre Haute, chairman of the Vigo County Tax Adjustment Board and a member of the Indiana Citizens Committee on Crime and Delinquency. He also served as chairman of the executive board of the NAACP.

Bell was a member of the Terre Haute Rotary Club, the Second Baptist Church and Vigo County Air Pollution Control Board.

He was named Man of the Year by Alpha Phi Alpha, Iota Lambda; was recipient of the Alumni Award of the College of Veterinary Medicine from Michigan State University in 1973; was presented with the Outstanding Boardmanship Award by the Indiana School Boards Association in 1978; and received the Region 3 Award for Outstanding Service to the Veterinary Profession presented by the American Animal Hospital Association in 1979, among other honors.

The Iverson Bell Recognition Award is given each year by the Multicultural Affairs Committee of the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges, “in recognition of Dr. Bell’s outstanding leadership and contributions in the promotion of opportunities for minorities in veterinary medical education.”

The award is presented annually at the Iverson Bell Symposium, the oldest symposium in veterinary medicine dedicated to promoting racial and ethnic diversity in the veterinary profession.
