Black History Month: Colored Day Nursery provided care for black kids

Nursery was open in Terre Haute for 58 years

TERRE HAUTE — From 1908 to 1966, the Colored Day Nursery in Terre Haute provided care and meals to black children whose parents worked.

The nursery was organized by a group of mothers to “serve the colored working mothers of the neighborhood,” according to the book “The Negro in the History of Indiana” by John Lyda.

Malissa Bishop was the founder, Lyda wrote. Bishop died in 1947 at age 90. Mrs. Robert Flowers, Hattie Parks and Daisy Hood all were instrumental in carrying out the mission of the nursery in its early days. Children there were taught manners and politeness.

When it began, the nursery was in the home of one of the mothers, but later the group rented a house and employed “a regular matron,” according to a note in a 1947 scrapbook from the Gerstmeyer Tech High School library.

In 1924, the board of directors bought a small home at 1320 S. 13th 1/2 St., where the Colored Day Nursery operated for the next 48 years. Also in 1924, the nursery was incorporated by the State Board of Charities, according to a Nov. 16, 1971 article in the Terre Haute Star. The house was remodeled and modernized.

During and after the Great Depression, the nursery served hot lunches to “the Washington School children for a nominal fee. Indigent children were fed free,” according to the 1947 scrapbook note. The Terre Haute Tribune reported that when the nursery opened, the organizers charged 5 cents per day for each child. “Some women who couldn’t pay brought food from home to help,” the article read.

During the 1950s, the nursery was supported financially by the local Community Chest.

Landis Fairrow, current owner of Homey’s Que and Grill at 13th Street and College Avenue, remembers attending the center in the mid-to-late 1950s. He knew it simply as “the day nursery,” he says.

“Ms. Shelton was the head and Ms. [Inez] Uzzell was the cook,” Fairrow said recently. “Basically I remember the lunches were fantastic.”

The building on 13th 1/2 Street could only accommodate 10 children at a time, and an ongoing issue was the need for space to serve more families.

The Terre Haute Star reported Dec. 7, 1956 that Lillian J. White donated a lot on South 13th Street adjoining a lot that had been bought by the Colored Day Nursery’s board of directors. That was the beginning of a capital campaign to expand. Plans drawn up for the new location would allow the nursery to accommodate up to 65 children at a time.

In 1966, the nursery was renamed the Southside Day Nursery, according to “Terre Haute: A Pictorial History” by Dorothy Jerse.

Funds were raised through the next few years. In May 1971, the Community Fund presented the board with $500 toward the building fund. Stran Steel Corp. had offered to donate the shell of the new building.

In 1972, the newly named Rose Southside Child Care & Development Center was built at 1438 S. 13th St., where it functioned until the late 1980s.
