New circulation director brings passion for industry to Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE — Josh Harmon spent 15 years working in the circulation department at the Champaign News Gazette.

Now, he’s bringing his experience – and enthusiasm – to the Tribune-Star, where he began his duties Monday as the new circulation director.

“Circulation is my passion. I love it. I love the industry,” said Harmon, 36.

He said his top priority will be customer service.

“I want it to be top-notch,” he said. His goal will be to make sure customers get their paper on time and also to ensure their newspapers are in good condition.

“Once you get that customer service at a certain level, then you go out and really push your product. I want to grow our numbers” and bring in new subscribers, he said.

Tribune-Star Publisher B.J. Riley said the newspaper is “very fortunate to have someone of Josh’s caliber come to Terre Haute.”

“I know that he will be able to help us achieve good things in our service to readers. I am pleased to have him come on board,” Riley said.

Having Harmon on board will allow Courtney Zellars to devote all of her time to her new role as marketing director, Riley said. Zellars previously served as circulation director.

In making the move to Terre Haute, Harmon said that Riley’s “passion and his excitement about the industry really attracted me.”

Also, Harmon said he loves the area, he has family close by “and I was ready for a change.”

His great-uncle was a pressman for 40 years at the Champaign News Gazette, the same newspaper where Harmon worked the first 15 years of his newspaper career.

He’s optimistic about the future of newspapers and doesn’t buy into “the hype” that their days are numbered. The industry has been feeling the effects of the current poor economy, similar to other businesses and industries, he said.

Harmon believes the Tribune-Star is a great value. “It has so much to offer. We have all the different advertisements, the great stories, you’ve got your college teams to follow. It’s really a good paper,” he said. Subscribing is an important way to “be in touch with your community and understand what’s going on.”

Harmon is married and has two children, ages 8 years and 21⁄2 years.
