The 8th Annual Clabber Girl BBQ Fest is spicing things up in the Wabash Valley this year. The event will once again serve as a fundraiser for the United Way and embrace the local community spirit. This year will mark the name change of the event to the Clabber Girl BBQ Fest Challenge. The Clabber Girl BBQ Fest Challenge will feature the Gladiator Challenge, the Water Ball Challenge, kid’s activities, live music and the first ever Terre Haute Chef’s Challenge on Saturday.
The Chef’s Challenge will be outside in the midst of the action. Four teams will go head-to-head as they battle to see who can prepare the best dish, raise the most money, and have the most fun. Teams will prepare an appetizer dish to serve a panel of area notable judges and a public audience panel. There will be 100 lucky tasters who can buy tickets to taste and vote for a People’s Choice winner. Dishes turned in to the panel of food judges will be scored on taste, appearance, ability to serve 100 people, and creative use of products from local farmers market. The winning team of the Chef’s Challenge will be determined based on the panel judge’s scores, people’s choice votes, and money raised. Teams will consist of Dan and Cheri Bradley from Indiana State University, Jeff Reynolds from HI-99, Kris Kraut from ISU, Danny and Claudia Tanoos from the Vigo County School Corp. and Terre Haute Economic Development Corp., David Wire from WTHI, Mandy Shook from Clabber Girl, Dottie and Wayne King from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, Diva Natalie from 100.7, Wade Fulford from GFS, John Rosene from Ivy Tech, Doug Edge from WTWO, and Debbie Laswell from Farm Bureau.
Registration for the Terre Haute Firefighter’s Water-Ball Challenge will start at 9 a.m. It will take place at Ninth and Cherry streets, in front of the Clabber Girl manufacturing building. The games will begin at 11 a.m. Participants can enter into a firefighter’s division as well as a non-firefighter’s division. The entry fee is $50. Children will also get to take part in the water fun as there will be a kid’s water-ball challenge as well as an obstacle course involving water.
The Gladiator Challenge sponsored by Union Hospital will officially kick off at 8 a.m. with the Cross Fit Challenge. The Strongman Competition will follow. The Gladiator Challenge will take place at Eighth and Cherry. The Strongman Competition ends with a truck pull that will take place on Eighth Street. Inside of Clabber Girl, there will be activities and games for children to participate in from noon to 5 p.m. ISU’s Science Center will put on demonstrations at 3 p.m and 4 p.m. in the Classroom Kitchen as well.
The Downtown Farmer’s Market will still be open from 8 a.m. to noon. This year, the Clabber Girl BBQ Fest Challenge will introduce “Local Flavor.” Local Flavor will give event-goers a chance to taste and sample foods from the area. To sample from one of the Local Flavor participants, a donation of $1 can be given. The Local Flavor will last from 1 to 4 p.m. Throughout the event there will also be local food vendors available to serve full meals to guests.
Frontier Communications will be hosting a Frontier Internet Challenge. This challenge is open to all event-goers throughout the day. The Terminal will host a beer garden for guests throughout the day and live music starts with the 15th and Hulman St. band at 7 p.m. Country music artist David Ball from Nashville, Tenn., will headline the night starting at 9 p.m.
“We look forward to bringing something new and fresh to the community,” said Teresa Shaffer, executive director of public relations, Clabber Girl. “The BBQ Fest Challenge should be a fun event for everyone.”
