NEW: Former ISU standout, Indiana Basketball Hall of Famer Steve Hollenbeck dies at 64

Team will honor former Sycamore at Saturday's game

TERRE HAUTE — Former Indiana State men’s basketball and baseball player Steve Hollenbeck died on Friday in Edinburgh. He was 64.

Hollenbeck was a four-year letterman for the Sycamores from the 1965-68 and played guard on some of the Sycamores’ most accomplished teams. During Hollenbeck’s senior season, ISU advanced to the championship game of the NCAA College Division.

Hollenbeck was also a third baseman for the ISU baseball team.

Hollenbeck was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall Of Fame member in 2005. He led Columbus High School (now Columbus North) to season-ending No. 1 rankings in 1963 and 1964. His teammate with the Bull Dogs was also his most prominent teammate with the Sycamores — Jerry Newsom, a NCAA All-American. Mike Copper and Butch Wade were other Columbus teammates of Hollenbeck’s at various stages of Hollenbeck’s career who joined him with the Sycamores.

Hollenbeck was an all-state basketball, baseball and football player at Columbus.

After his ISU career, Hollenbeck was an educator in the Edinburgh school system for more than 35 years.

ISU will honor Hollenbeck, a regular visitor to ISU games over the years, with a moment of silence and with a patch on its uniform today.

Funeral arrangements for Hollenbeck were pending at press time.
