DQ treats cool down Valley, benefit Riley

A portion of today's Blizzard sales to benefit Indy children's hospital

TERRE HAUTE — Temperatures were in the 90s by early afternoon, but across the Wabash Valley today, Blizzards are under way.

Dozens of Riley Hospital for Children stickers lined the window of the Dairy Queen store at 3201 Wabash Ave. by 1:15 p.m. That store is among DQs nationwide participating in the annual Miracle Treat Day.

The fundraiser — $1 from every Blizzard Treat sold today —  benefits the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. For us, that’s Riley Hospital for Children at Indianapolis.

Dick and Betsy Frank had their hands full as they walked away from the counter and back to their car. The fundraiser served as a good excuse to buy some ice cream on a hot day, they said.

“That’s why we’re here,” Betsy said, carrying her own cappuccino and Heath bar concoction.

Her husband had the “Chocolate Extreme” Blizzard Treat, as well as an M&M style for a friend.

“Not that we don’t like Blizzards,” he said with a grin. “But this is an extra good reason to do it.”

The Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals program benefits kids treated at 170 hospitals throughout North America, including Riley. Last year, about $175,000 was raised for that facility through the DQ program, according to information provided by the Riley Children’s Foundation.

More information about the fundraiser can be found online at www.miracletreatday.com.

The program is ongoing today and participating DQs include the Wabash Avenue location; 1331 N. 13th St.; 1460 Fort Harrison Road; and 395 E. Davis Drive in Terre Haute. The Brazil DQ at Union Street and U.S. 40, and the Clinton store at 110 Elm St. both are taking part, as is the Marshall, Ill., store on North Michigan Avenue and the Paris store on North Main Street.
