Motorcycle ride to celebrate Mellencamp’s birthday, support charities

BLOOMINGTON — Harley-Davidson Motorcycle rides in southern Indiana have plans to host a Hurts So Good charity ride as a tribute to Seymour native John Mellencamp in honor of his 61st birthday on Sunday, Oct. 7.

“We will be re-tracing the route of the video John did for his 1980s hit “Hurts So Good,”” organizer Kevin Plummer said. “One hundred per cent of all money raised will be split between two charities: the Marilyn Mellencamp Scholarship for the Arts and Jayda’s Teddy Bear Ride for Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis.”

The ride will start at Bloomington Harley-Davidson, 522 W. Gourley Pike, which is in Mellencamp’s current hometown of Bloomington. Registration will began at 10 a.m. Tickets are $25 per bike, plus $20 for an extra rider.

Kickstands will go up at noon, as riders will travel down St. Rd. 446 toward Medora, where “Hurts So Good” was filmed. From Medora riders will travel to the original small town and Mellencamp’s original hometown of Seymour. There will be a silent auction and live music from Below Zero, a Bloomington-based blues band, and Seymour’s own TOG Band at Garvey’s Pub, formerly Dakota Ridge, or best known to Mellenheads as the “country, country club” used in Mellencamp’s movie “Falling From Grace.”

“We will have several door prizes, as well as many autographed signed items that you may win, or bid on during our silent auction,” Plummer said.

There will be two guitars that have been autographed by Mellencamp. The first guitar will be raffled at the start of the ride and the second will be up for bid during the silent auction at the end of the ride, according to Plummer.

“We have been blessed by many businesses helping us with donations and helping us gather some really nice door prizes,” he said. “We have many other items that John Mellencamp has signed for us to use as silent auction items and door prizes.”

The silent auction and music are open to the public and all Mellencamp fans are invited to come celebrate the musician’s birthday.

“For the true Mellencamp fan, check out our VIP package to get a private tour to see certain sites in and around the Bloomington area,” Plummer said.

For more information about the ride, visit www.harleyindiana.com, contact Kevin Plummer at 812-322-2279, or find them on Facebook by searching, “John Mellencamps - Hurts So Good Charity Ride.”
