Evening accident closes Indiana 46

Woman taken to hospital after single-car crash south of I-70

Tribune-Star staff report

TERRE HAUTE — A woman was taken to Union Hospital in Terre Haute on Tuesday evening after a single-car accident on Indiana 46 near Interstate 70.

The woman, whose name was not immediately available, was taken to the northside hospital after an accident in which her SUV ended up in a muddy creek running alongside Indiana 46 about a half mile south of I-70.

Because of the accident, traffic on Indiana 46 was blocked for several minutes in both directions around 5:30 p.m. Eventually, the westbound lane was opened as a wrecker from Peffley and Hinshaw Wrecker Service of Terre Haute used a long cable and heavy chain to pull the SUV out of the creek several feet below the highway. The front of the SUV was badly damaged in the accident and caked with thick mud.

Nobody else was injured and no other vehicles were involved in the accident, police at the scene told reporters. Traffic was disrupted for approximately 45 minutes on Indiana 46.

The Riley Fire Department, Honey Creek Fire Department, Vigo County Sheriff’s Department and the Indiana State Police responded to the accident.
