BRAZIL —
The police chief for the Brazil Police Department has abruptly stepped down to rejoin the regular patrol ranks of the department.
David L. Archer issued a news release late Wednesday afternoon stating that he was stepping down as police chief as of 4 p.m.
“It’s with much regret that I must vacate this office, however, it is believed that this is in the best interest of the city that I do so at this time,” Archer stated.
Mayor Ann Bradshaw did not return repeated telephone calls from the Tribune-Star requesting comment. And an officer answering the phone at the police department said that no additional comment would be made Wednesday afternoon.
That person also declined to state whether Assistant Police Chief Mark Loudermilk would be acting police chief until a new chief is named. Loudermilk was promoted from sergeant to assistant chief in April.
In his statement, Archer did not give a reason for his decision to step down.
“I leave this office with the belief that I have done the best job I could administratively and the hope that I have helped further educate and protect the citizens of Brazil with some of the programs and policies I’ve implemented during my tenure,” Archer stated.
“Although I will be stepping down from the office of chief, I will not be leaving the department,” he continued. “I will be stepping back into the position of shift sergeant within the department and will assume those duties beginning Monday.”
