TERRE HAUTE —
Seven bands are scheduled to perform at the second annual “On the Banks of the Wabash” Community Band Festival on Saturday in Fairbanks Park.
The music is to begin at 2 p.m. and last until 9 p.m. The Terre Haute Community Band, the festival’s host, said two new groups, the Bloomington (Ind.) Community Band and the Pipes and Drums of the Fountain Trust from Covington, Ind., will make their first appearances in Terre Haute.
Pipes and Drums is a competition bagpipe band whose members come from Lafayette, Terre Haute, Crawfordsville, Rockville, Covington, Danville, Ill., and other communities. Besides competing in as many as five registered pipe band competitions each year, the band performs at parades, festivals and events throughout Indiana and Illinois.
The Bloomington Community Band is an all-adult volunteer concert band ranging from 50 to 60 members and from 18 to 85 years in age. The band plays an average of 20 concerts per year at civic events and public gatherings in Monroe County and the surrounding area.
The Montgomery County Civic Band is scheduled to kick off the event at 2 p.m. followed by the Pipe and Drums at 3 p.m. The Marshall (Ill.) City Band will perform at 4 p.m. followed by the Brazil Concert Band at 5 p.m., the Bloomington Community Band at 6 p.m., the Greater Greenwood Community Band at 7 p.m. and the Terre Haute Community Band at 8 p.m.
In the event of rain, the festival will move indoors into the YMCA building on the grounds of Fairbanks Park.
The audience can expect to hear rousing marches; medleys of tunes from Broadway and motion pictures shows; popular songs from different eras; and music written especially for band performance.
Each band is selecting titles from its own library and will include the music it most enjoys performing. Featured solo and ensemble performances also are planned.
Because the event begins during the heat of the day, tents will be erected to provide shady areas for the audience. And a misting station will be set up on the grounds.
Food vendors will be in the park to offer refreshments, and all the usual amenities of the park will be available to those attending the festival. Audience members are advised to a chair or blanket, sun screen and insect repellent.
