Fun for the whole family: Downtown Terre Haute Block Party is Saturday

A showcase of Terre Haute’s bustling downtown is the focus of the annual Block Party scheduled for this Saturday. An event to promote community spirit, the 2012 Downtown Terre Haute Block Party will be full of activities for the young and old. It also serves as a welcome back for college students.

Stretching from Fourth to Ninth streets, the block party will feature five stages for live entertainment. About 100 vendors of arts and crafts, as well as nonprofit groups, are expected. And one of the best parts? It’s free.

A Kids Zone near the Children’s Museum will feature face painting, balloon animals and other children’s activities all day. Wells Fargo Stagecoach Rides will be offered from 1 to 4 p.m.

Wabash Valley bands providing live music include: Paul Bertsch Band, The Crow Committee, Brad Anderson and Fan Fare, Any Day But Sunday, Dicky James and the Blue Flames, family favorite The Lemon Brothers Band, Mullet Over, Erin Wilson, The Pissed Off Catfish, 4 Days in Space and Octane.

Performances by Academy of Dance and by the Swingin’ Mates square dancers are also on tap, along with a fashion show.

A cruise-in car show is planned from from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Benefitting CHANCES for Indiana Youth, registration is $10; day-of-show registration will take place from 9 a.m. to noon in the First Financial Bank parking lot (enter off Ohio Street). All makes and models are welcome. Vehicles will be on display along Wabash Avenue from Fifth to Seventh streets.

A motorcycle show presented by Christian Motorcyclists Association Chapter 916 is planned from 2 to 4 p.m. Registration is from 1 to 2 p.m. Entry fee is $10 and all proceeds benefit “Run for the Son — 2013.” The show will be in the Morris Plan Parking lot at Ninth Street and Wabash Avenue (enter off Ninth Street.) There will be awards for sport, stock and custom classes, along with a people’s choice award.

At 6:30 p.m., a cornhole tournament is planned between Fifth and Sixth streets. The contest is free to two-person teams, and several prizes will be awarded. Team registration check-in is at 5:30 p.m.

Plenty of parking is available, with two parking garages open, and several area parking lots and on-street parking available. Wabash will be closed from Fourth to Ninth streets. Also closed will be the connecting side streets from Cherry to Ohio streets.

Maps will be printed for distribution to identify restaurants, businesses, vendors and the entertainment on the stages (or check out the map in this edition of ’BASH located above). Numerous restaurants line the block party route, offering a variety of food.
