Tonight’s Vigo County football games
Greencastle at West Vigo
Kickoff — 7 p.m.
Airwaves — None planned in the Wabash Valley.
Records — The Greencastle Tiger Cubs (1-0) will visit the West Vigo Vikings (0-1) for a non-conference matchup in Week 2 of the regular season.
Last meeting — In August 2011, Greencastle won at home over the Vikings 54-0.
Last time West Vigo defeated Greencastle — In August 2010, the Vikings won at home over Greencastle 15-13.
Coaches — Josh Buis is 8-3 in his second year at Greencastle, while Jeff Cobb is 36-38 in his eighth season at the helm for West Vigo.
Outlook — Last weekend, Greencastle won at home over Monrovia 21-7 and West Vigo lost at home to Evansville Harrison 52-7.
Injuries, lineups — For Greencastle, all regulars appear healthy. Key starters include senior quarterback Nick Gilliam, senior middle linebacker Carter Lewis and senior wide receiver/defensive back Mac Shuee.
For West Vigo, senior offensive lineman/linebacker Tyler Murlin (knee) is out for this week but plans to return next week. Key starters include senior running back/defensive end Danny Creasey, junior lineman/defensive lineman Sam McClain and senior cornerback Andy Velasquez.
Coaches’ comments — Buis on his squad: “We’ve just got to be prepared and play good, sound fundamental football. We’ve got to continue to improve.”
Buis on playing the Vikings: “They’re very well-coached. They’re disciplined. They do some things offensively that can confuse you from a blocking-scheme standpoint.”
Cobb on his squad: “Our first two opponents will give us some good, quality tests. Harrison had a lot of speed. I thought we did a good job against their running game, but they had a lot of passing yards. So we need to get more pressure on the quarterback and force him to make some bad throws.”
Cobb on playing the Tiger Cubs: “Greencastle had a great year last year and they’ve got most of their starters back. They present a lot of challenges. They have a lot of size on the offensive line and they have a very good quarterback. He’s a big kid, about 6-2, and he throws the ball well.”

Terre Haute North vs. Terre Haute South
Kickoff — 7 p.m.
Airwaves — No broadcasts are scheduled.
Records — Either North’s Patriots (0-1, 0-0) or South Braves (1-0, 0-0) will be leading the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference for a week after tonight. In nonconference opening games last week, the Patriots lost 35-24 at No. 6 Castle and the Braves won 34-24 on the road against Class 3A power Indian Creek.
Last meeting — South won 14-7 in overtime a year ago.
Last time North beat South — The Patriots won 22-21, also in overtime, in 2010. South leads the overall series 25-22.
Coaches — Chris Barrett is 38-71 in his 11th season at North, 66-103 in his 18th season overall. Mark Raetz is 13-28 in his sixth season at South.
Outlook — South quarterback Danny Etling is a Purdue recruit, ranked in the top 200 among U.S. high school seniors, and is looking for improvement tonight despite passing for 267 yards and four touchdowns a week ago. Tyler Seibert caught three of the touchdown passes, ran for a fourth score, and had 234 all-purpose yards.
North gained 324 yards against a state-ranked team last week, but is also looking for improvement after committing five turnovers that essentially cost the Patriots the game. The coach’s son, also Chris Barrett, passed for 186 yards and Ricky Brookins led the rushing attack; North’s Division I college recruits so far are tight end Calvin Blank (Ball State) and receiver Austin Lewis (Western Michigan), both of whom could also make appearances defensively.
Injuries, lineup changes — North is expected to get senior running back Brother Scank, a co-captain and four-year varsity player, back after he missed last week with an injury and is otherwise healthy. South center Zac Harper is probable after suffering an injury in the Indian Creek game, and the Braves will have safety Dillon Bell and kicker Adam Kahn back after both missed last week for reasons that did not involve injury. Lineman Bobby Bennett of the Braves remains unavailable.
Words from Barrett — “We were mistake-ridden [at Castle] and it was the difference in the ballgame. We matched up well [against the Knights] but we spotted them 28 points; we tried to dig our way out, but that’s tough against the No. 6 team in the state. We know what we need to work on.
“South is a very good football team. They have a lot of weapons, and it’s hard to match up with them. Their passing attack is obviously dangerous, and anytime you play a team with big-play capability it’s scary. We hope we can match up and make it a game.”
Words from Raetz — “We saw a lot of things [in the Indian Creek game] we need to fix; there was a 10-minute stretch in the fourth quarter [when Indian Creek rallied from 28-3 to within 28-24] when it was pretty ugly. But we saw a lot of good, positive things too.
“North is another good team. They have two good classes back to back [juniors and seniors], their skill players are very good and they have great size, much bigger than us. We’ll definitely have to execute and play well to win.”
