TERRE HAUTE —
There’s no time like autumn in the Wabash Valley. On any given weekend festivals dot the landscape — from small towns like Cory and its apples to Terre Haute and its Blues at the Crossroads. And don’t forget all those covered bridges.
A couple huge events have already taken place, including the Downtown Block Party the last Saturday in August. But festival season is just kicking off. Below is a list of some of the major festivals coming up in the Valley.
• Mansfield Cornbread Fest (continues today; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; enjoy ham and beans and cornbread, the Roller Run Car Show and a free oldies concert).
• Bridgeton Milling and Craft Days (continues today; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; tour the Bridgeton Mill; Craft Demonstration Days at the 1878 House & Barn feature pioneer and modern crafters at work creating their wares).
• Oktoberfest (Sept. 13-15; Clabber Girl Festival Marketplace, Ninth and Cherry streets, Terre Haute; German music; grilled brats, chicken, schnitzel, sauerkraut, German potato salad, apple strudel and other delicious desserts; German import and domestic beers, soft drinks, pretzels and popcorn complete the menu).
• Blues at the Crossroads (Sept. 14-15; gates open at 5 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday; 12 music groups and bands perform throughout each evening on one stage at 7th and Wabash in downtown Terre Haute; food and drinks available down Wabash; bring lawn chairs).
• Sullivan Rotary Corn Festival (Sept. 19-22; with carnival, parade, Turtle Derby, live entertainment, corn eating contest and more).
• Family Bash on the Wabash (Sept. 22; 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; at Fairbanks Park, Terre Haute; Vigo County CASA Kids is hosting its third annual fundraising/awareness event; family-friendly activities including food, games, prizes, a bounce house, pony cart rides, live entertainment and a silent auction).
• Cory Apple Fest (Sept. 28-30; meals at the firehouse; car and motorcycle show; tractor pulls; parade; live entertainment; crafts; flea market; antiques; yard sale and food booths; golf scramble; redneck lawn mower derby; Cory is southeast of Terre Haute, just off Indiana 46 in Clay County).
• Honeybee Festival (Sept. 28-30; a weekend celebration of food, beverages, live entertainment and a parade in downtown Paris, Ill.).
• Clay County Popcorn Fest (Oct. 4-7; at Brazil’s Forest Park; boasts free popcorn for everyone; includes carnival, kids’ contests and activities for whole family; popcorn eating contests, raffles and live entertainment).
• Fowler Park Pioneer Days (Oct. 6-7; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; admission free; parking is $2; walk through a village of the past with log cabins, a gristmill, a covered bridge and a blacksmith at work; crafters and traders; hands-on activities; food vendors; the park is south of Terre Haute, just off U.S. 41 on Oregon Church Road).
• Newport Hill Climb (Oct. 5-7; about 300 competition and 600-plus practice attempts at running the hill; street fair with food, flea market vendors, a parade, street dance and fireworks; and of course a car show).
• Indiana State University homecoming (Oct. 5-6; residents of the Wabash Valley, make plans to come to Indiana State to celebrate with the Sycamore Tricycle Derby, parade, football and Tent City at Memorial Stadium, which offers fun for the whole family).
• Old Fashion Day and Arts, Too! (Oct. 7; Collett Park, Seventh Street and Maple Avenue, Terre Haute; a variety of music at the gazebo; arts, handmade items and homemade treats available for purchase; carriage and hayrides; food; puppet shows; horseshoes; antiques; crafts; face-painting; car cruise-in; try your hand at the Potter’s Wheel; staff will be cooking ham and beans, too).
• Parke County Covered Bridge Festival (Oct. 12-21; take a stroll through one of Parke County’s famous covered bridges; browse craft, antique and flea market stands; towns host dinners and more; Rockville, Mansfield, Bridgeton, Montezuma, Tangier and Rosedale are must-stops; yard sales too numerous to count and food vendors as far as the eye can see).
