UPDATE: Putnam County fourth-grader correctly spells third-round word, nisei, in national spelling bee

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — Putnam County fourth-grader Addison Hughes correctly spelled the word “nisei” this afternoon in Round 3 of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Nisei means “a son or daughter of immigrant Japanese parents who is born and educated in America.”

Around 5:30 p.m., Addison will learn if he advances to Thursday’s semi-final round. The scores from the oral rounds will be combined with Tuesday’s written test to determine who advances.

In Round 2, he correctly spelled the word prosciutto, a type of cured ham.

“It’s kind of nerve-wracking,” he said in a telephone interview. “I try not to act like it, but I really am nervous.”

He asked for the definition of prosciutto and also asked to have it used in a sentence.

“There were more people in front of me than I’ve ever seen in front of me,” and plenty of people behind him as well, he said.

Hughes said he’s having a great time seeing the sites in Washington, D.C. “It’s probably the best week I’m ever going to have,” he said.

Hughes, the 9-year-old son of Adam and Beverly Hughes, attends South Putnam Central Elementary. Earlier this year, he won the 28th Annual Wabash Valley Regional Spelling Bee and his trip to Washington is sponsored by the Tribune-Star.

The oral rounds of the 84th edition of the bee began this morning, with 275 spellers from across the United States and around the world competing.
