Terre Haute South at Indian Creek
Kickoff — 7 p.m.
Airwaves — None in the Wabash Valley.
Records — It’s the season opener for both teams. South’s Braves were 3-7 a year ago, Indian Creek’s Braves 8-5 after winning Class 3A’s Sectional 22.
Last meeting — The schools have never played each other in high school football.
Coaches — Mark Raetz is 12-38 in his sixth season at South. Mike Gillin is 99-29 at Indian Creek, 265-101 in his 34th season overall.
Outlook — South may be facing just a Class 3A team tonight, but it’s a good Class 3A team that’s won back-to-back sectionals. Although South’s Danny Etling is deservedly being mentioned among the nation’s best high school quarterbacks, Indian Creek’s passing game — quarterback Matthew Wray to Brenden Smith and Cory Utecht — posted better numbers a year ago.
Injuries, lineup changes — South is healthy, although safety Dillon Bell will miss the game because of being ejected from the team’s sectional game a year ago. Utecht is questionable for Indian Creek, but its Braves have added a new receiving threat in senior Morgan Morrison, formerly just a linebacker.
Words from Raetz — “I saw a lot of positive things [from the scrimmage against Northview]. In the first two segments we moved the ball well and played well defensively.
“I think [Indian Creek is] a good team, with something like 10 or 11 straight winning seasons. Coach Gillin is probably among the top five active coaches [in Indiana] in wins. They throw the ball well, and I imagine it will be tough to play at their place.”
Words from Gillin — “I don’t know if any coach is probably happy [about how his team played in one scrimmage, Indian Creek facing Greensburg last week]. We’ve got work to do and we’ve got to get after it right away.
“I’m not really sure what kind of game plan we’ll see [from South]. I saw them in 7-on-7 in the summer, so I know how good their quarterback is. It’ll be a tough test, but we’re going to compete and see how we stack up.”

Terre Haute North at Castle
Kickoff — 7:30 p.m.
Airwaves — None in the Wabash Valley.
Records — The Terre Haute North Patriots (2-8 last season) will visit the Castle Knights (11-1 last season) in the 2012 season opener for both teams.
Last meeting — On Aug. 19, 2011, Castle blanked the Patriots 44-0 at North.
Last time North beat Castle — In the 2010 season opener, North outlasted Castle 35-31.
Coaches — Chris Barrett is 38-70 in his 11th season in charge at North and 66-102 in his 18th season overall, while Doug Hurt is 46-25 in his seventh year at Castle.
Injuries, lineups — For North, all regulars appear healthy. Some key starters include senior fullback/linebacker Lee Davis, senior tight end/defensive end Calvin Blank and senior wide receiver/defensive back Austin Lewis.
For Castle, all regulars appear healthy. Some key senior wide receiver Cameron Parus, senior wide receiver Joe Redburn and senior quarterback Mitch Gilles.
Coaches’ comments — Barrett on his own squad: “We feel pretty good about where we are right now, as far as effort and attitude. But until you line up against somebody else, it’s really hard to tell… We have good leadership this year, but we need to apply it into a game situation.”
Barrett on playing the Knights: “They lost three of their starting offensive linemen, but they have almost all of their skill players back and they’re very good and very experienced. They’ll be very confident coming into this game.”
Hurt on his own squad: “It’ll be interesting to see how we do. We’ve got some question marks to answer.”
Hurt on playing the Patriots: “They’re a senior-dominated club, a team we’re very familiar with. We’ve gotten to know their personnel and they’ve gotten to know us. With [wide receiver Charles] Dillahunt and couple other skill guys, they’re very dynamic on offense… They’re very well-rounded. I don’t see any major weaknesses. They’re a much bigger, stronger team than us in terms of stature.”

Evansville Harrison at West Vigo
Kickoff — 8 p.m.
Airwaves — None in the Wabash Valley.
Records — Evansville Harrison’s Warriors of Class 4A and West Vigo’s Vikings of 3A will open their season at Jay Barrett Field.
Last meeting — Harrison won 36-0 last season.
Last time West Vigo beat Harrison — The Warriors have won the past two seasons.
Coaches — Jeff Cobb is 36-37 in his eighth season at West Vigo. Brian Lewis is 3-28 in his fourth year at Evansville Harrison, 9-55 in his seventh year overall.
Injuries, lineups — For West Vigo,offensive lineman and linebacker Tyler Merlin (minor knee injury) will not play.
Outlook — The Vikings will be looking to build upon its performance in last week’s scrimmage as several freshmen will be taking on key roles for the Vikings this season.
Coaches’ comments — Cobb on his own squad: “We’re looking for improvement from last week. We wnat to see the kids play at a high intensity and a high speed and eliminate mistakes that were made last week.”
Cobb on playing the Warriors: “They have a lot of team speed, especially their quarterback and running back present a lot of problems. I think we matchup well for the most part. We compete size wise. We maybe have a slight advantage on the offensive line as far as speed.”
