Wheel puts new spin on fair

Original ride made for World’s Fair in Seattle

TERRE HAUTE — The Wabash Valley Fairgrounds has taken on a new look with the erection of the Seattle Wheel, a Ferris wheel that stands more than 90 feet tall.

The ride is a big part of the 83rd Annual Vigo County 4-H Fair, which starts Sunday and runs through July 14. The fair is sponsored by First Financial Bank.

The original Seattle Wheel was created by the Valarie Brothers for the World’s Fair in Seattle, and the traveling version has created excitement everywhere it goes.

David Smith, nationally known as “Cannonball Smith,” will bring his Human Cannonball to the fair twice nightly. He will launch himself over a carnival ride, propelled through the air from the barrel of a huge cannon.

“We are very excited to have attractions of this high level brought to Terre Haute,” said Jennifer Cook, Wabash Valley Fair Association president. “Jimmy Drew and his Drew Expositions Amusement Park on Tour are always a welcome treat to our community, and this year Jimmy has brought us some new spectacular additions for our fair.

“Truck and tractor pulls, demolition derbies, monster trucks, ‘The Vocalist’ singing competition, Action Track racing and the rodeo come together for a great lineup of grandstand events that will provide a week of outstanding entertainment,” Cook said.

“We are looking forward to a great celebration of excellence at the 2012 Vigo County Fair,” she said.
