As one of bluegrass music’s elite bands, The Grascals have a long list of highlights.
Two Grammy nominations. National TV performances, including “The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson” and the CBS “Early Show.” Tours with Dolly Parton and Hank Williams Jr. Recording sessions with Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley, Charlie Daniels, The Oak Ridge Boys and Tom T. Hall. Acclaim from critics.
Yet, the five-man, one-woman group from Nashville, Tenn., has never performed in lead singer Terry Eldredge’s home community. That shortcoming will change in a few months.
The Grascals are scheduled to give a concert at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, in Union Christian Church at 5350 E. Hulman Dr. in Terre Haute, said the Rev. Mark Grayless, minister at the church.
“It’s not a church service; it’s a community event for us,” Grayless said Monday. “We’re giving them a venue to perform in.”
Tickets cost $15 and are available through eventbrite.com or by calling Union Christian Church at (812) 877-1187, Grayless said. Seating is limited to 300 ticketholders.
Eldredge grew up in Vigo County and graduated from West Vigo High School before pursuing a music career in Nashville. He handled bass, guitar and vocals for various Music City acts, including Grand Ole Opry stars Lonzo and Oscar, the Osborne Brothers, Larry Cordle and Lonesome Standard Time, and Parton’s Blue-niques.
After The Grascals formed eight years ago, they quickly earned Grammy nominations for their 2005 debut album, “The Grascals,” and its 2006 follow-up, “Long List of Heartaches.” Their 2011 album, “The Grascals and Friends,” was the No. 6 album on Billboard’s Bluegrass charts last year. Their latest album, “Life Finds a Way,” and its single, “Pretty Melody,” both rank No. 1 on the Sirius XM Bluegrass Junction chart. Eldredge’s bandmates include Jamie Johnson on guitar and vocals, mandolinist Danny Roberts, bassist Terry Smith, banjoist Kristin Scott Benson, and fiddle player Jeremy Abshire.
Grayless expects the band will play its hits, such as “Me and John and Paul,” “Don’t Tell Mama,” and a cover of The Monkees’ “Last Train to Clarksville.”
“It’s going to be a regular Grascals concert,” Grayless said.
