West Vigo at Linton
Kickoff — 7 p.m.
Airwaves — WQTY-FM (93.3)
Records — West Vigo (2-1) defeated Brown County 40-19. Class A No. 3 Linton (3-0) defeated Wood Memorial 60-6.
Last meeting — Linton won 54-20 last year.
Last time West Vigo beat Linton — The Vikings won 33-29 in 2010.
Coaches — Jeff Cobb is 38-38 in his 8th season at West Vigo. Steve Weber is 118-28 in his 13th season at Linton.
Outlook — The Vikings gained confidence with an easy victory over Brown County last week, which was their first victory on the field after being forfeited a win against Evansville Harrison in the opening week. West Vigo moved the ball on the ground as the Vikings’ line dominated Brown County’s line. The Vikings will need to continue that trend against a high-flying Linton team that boasts quarterback Austin Karazsia and a host of weapons for him to throw to. Linton is averaging 53 points per game, but the Miners’ defense showed some vulnerability in a 58-26 win over Sullivan on Aug. 24. If the Vikings can keep the Miners’ passing game in-check and if it can control the clock with its ground game, it will be close. But if the Vikings can’t do that, the Miners have the ability to put up serious points.

Terre Haute South at Carmel
Kickoff — 7:30 p.m.
Airwaves — No broadcasts are scheduled.
Records — Terre Haute South’s Braves (2-1, 0-1 Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference) go on the road to face the top-ranked Carmel Greyhounds (3-0, 1-0), the defending Class 5A state champions.
Last meeting — Carmel won 54-7 last year.
Last time South beat Carmel — Carmel has won by at least 47 points the last four seasons. The Braves beat them 21-14 in overtime in the last regular-season game of the 2002 season.
Coaches — Mark Raetz is 14-39 in his sixth season at South. Kevin Wright is 26-3 in his third year at Carmel and 161-57 in his 19th season overall.
Outlook — The Braves had trouble stopping the running games of Terre Haute North in the second half two weeks ago and of Vincennes Lincoln in the first half last week. That would have been a fatal flaw against last year’s Carmel team that loved to pound the ball up the middle. This year the Greyhounds are a spread team, but that might not be good news — Carmel’s two-quarterback attack seems potent again. And depth is always a concern against the Greyhounds.
Injuries, lineup changes — The Braves probably won’t have wide receiver/safety Jacob Johnson back yet, and strong safety Logan Deady remains questionable. But linebacker Derik Whalen returns to the lineup, defensive end Howie Lawson and and cornerback Kane Wilford are expected back after missing last week, and defensive back Taxi Brown is healthy for the first time since before the team’s preseason scrimmage. Whalen’s return could allow Pedro Piloni to return to running back, where he and Ian Newton will be a one-two punch, but the Danny Etling-Tyler Seibert passing combination is still the Braves’ best weapon.
A healthy Carmel team is led defensively by lineman Vic Roe and a pair of three-year starting linebackers, John Kenny and Loukas Sinnis. Senior quarterback Brandon Lugar is the team’s top rusher, junior quarterback John Lampe had 24 completions last week in a win over sixth-ranked Center Grove, tying a school record set by former Colts quarterback Mark Herrmann, and junior receiver Austin Roberts is being recruited by some of the top college programs in the country.
Words from Raetz — “[Last Friday’s 34-0 decision at Vincennes] was a good win; anytime you can win is good. I thought we played a good second half, and hopefully we can build off that momentum this week.
“[The Greyhounds] are another solid team like they usually are. They are very well coached and are sound on both sides of the ball.”
Words from Wright — “We’re probably overrated a little bit [at No. 1], but we haven’t lost; rankings are fun for fans who don’t know what reality is.
“Danny Etling is a very, very good quarterback, one of the best in the country, and [the Braves] have good skill kids. They have potential to put points up on the board. We’ll have to snap back and refocus [after a 31-21 win at rival Center Grove], because they’re good enough to beat us if we don’t play well. We’ll try to use our depth to our advantage.”

Center Grove at Terre Haute North

Records — Center Grove’s Trojans (2-1, 0-1 Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference) come into the game ranked sixth in the state after a 31-21 loss last week to top-ranked Carmel. Terre Haute North’s Patriots are 2-1 and 1-0 and coming off a 55-0 win over Northview.
Last meeting — Center Grove won 35-7 last year
Last time North beat Center Grove — The Patriots won 42-21 in a sectional semifinal game on Oct. 28, 2005.
Coaches — Chris Barrett is 40-71 in his 11th season at North and 68-103 in his 18th season overall. Eric Moore is 118-48 in his 14th season at Center Grove and 178-53 in his 18th season overall.
Outlook — The Patriots are a strong, mature, physical team this season; the Trojans are a strong, mature, physical team every season. History and tradition favor the visitors, while home field (Barrett wouldn’t mind a little mud, since Center Grove rarely plays on grass) and emotion give the Patriots a chance.
Injuries, lineup changes — A couple of the physical specimens Patriot fans might notice in the Center Grove lineup are 6-foot-8, 285-pound offensive lineman Skyler Lacey and 6-9, 250-pound tight end Nate Wozniak. One of the smaller Trojans, 5-8, 150-pound sophomore Max Norris, might be more dangerous than either, however.
Offensive guard Bryce Woodason is questionable after suffering a practice injury earlier this week, but otherwise the Patriots are healthy. Quarterback Chris Barrett II can hand off to Brother Scank, Ricky Brookins or Kai Stratten or pass to targets like Calvin Blank, Austin Lewis and Charles Dillahunt.
Words from Barrett — “We met our objectives [in last week’s 55-0 win over Northview] going going out and playing football and executing.
“Center Grove executes the wing-T [offense] very well, and they are always physical in the running game and defensively. It’s same old, same old … I think even the people in our stands know what to expect from this game.”
