Officials identify body found in eastern Vigo woods

Body is that of missing Brazil man, Charles Raymond Chumley Jr.

TERRE HAUTE — Dental records have been used to confirm that a body found Sunday in northeastern Vigo County is that of Charles Raymond Chumley Jr., 30, of Brazil, who went missing in that area Dec. 8.

Records retrieved from Indianapolis on Tuesday were used by Vigo County Coroner Dr. Roland Kohr in the identification of the partially decomposed body located in a wooded area on Grotto Road, said Sgt. Joe Watts of the Indiana State Police.

There is still no cause of death determined and investigators are awaiting the results of toxicology tests, which could take up to two weeks, Watts said.

The Chumley family has been notified of the positive identification. A family member of Chumley’s contacted Tuesday afternoon by the Tribune-Star said the family has no comment to make at this time.

The condition of the body did not allow for a visual confirmation of identity, Kohr said on Monday. The veteran forensic pathologist performed the autopsy on the body at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

Chumley was reported missing on Dec. 10, two days after his wife Jennifer said she last saw him around 11:45 p.m. Dec. 8 in the driveway of a family member’s home at 11300 E. Davis Ave. That address is less than a mile north of the wooded area where the body was found Sunday near 11236 Grotto Road, a little more than three months after Chumley went missing. His body was found by a group surveying the property, which is currently for sale.

The investigation into Chumley’s disappearance and death is ongoing. Anyone with information that could be helpful in the case should contact Indiana State Police Detective Sam Stearley at (812) 299-1151.
