Benjamin Harrison Site exhibit explores culture, lifestyle of former first ladies

TERRE HAUTE — The Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site is opening a new 10-month exhibit “Raising the Hem: Historic Fashions of American Nobility” to explore the culture and lifestyle of former first ladies of the U.S.

“Raising the Hem,” which runs through Dec. 31, complements the site’s permanent display of women’s suffrage artifacts in the restored carriage house.

Dresses, capes, hats, shoes, fans and purses of White House ladies are among the features of the exhibit, in addition to interactive components that include a life-size paper dress-up doll, a touch table with decorative fans and a “write-in” activity for visitors wishing to leave a written mark.

Raising the Hem will feature Frances Cleveland, Grace Coolidge, Mamie Eisenhower, Julia Grant, Florence Harding, Lou Hoover, Harriet Lane, Mary Lincoln, Mary Arthur McElroy, Jane Pierce, Edith Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, Helen Taft, Bess Truman, Edith Wilson, Caroline Harrison, Mary Harrison McKee, Mary Lord Dimmick (Harrison) and Elizabeth Harrison.

Tickets are $10 for general adult admission and $5 for students; children younger than 5 are admitted free; AAA members with valid ID will receive discounted rates. Tours are hosted from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

For tickets or more information, call 317-631-1888.
