One-woman show to celebrate black history

VINCENNES — In celebration of Black History Month, Marlene Rivero will present her one-woman show, “The Hospital Ship Red Rover, the Mound City Marine Ways, and a Living History Nurse, Ann Stokes” at 7 p.m. on Feb. 23 in Shircliff Theater at Vincennes University.

Rivero, a southern Illinois native, is a storyteller and re-enactor who celebrates her black ancestors’ adventures through stories, songs and costumes.

In “The Hospital Ship…” Rivero tells the story of an important Union Army hospital, supply post and contraband camp during the Civil War, from the perspective of a black American nurse aboard the hospital ship.

The performance is free, but donations will be accepted. All proceeds will benefit the Lyles Station Historic School and Museum, located west of Princeton. Lyles Station is one of the last remaining black American settlements in Indiana.

The Shircliff Theater is at Second and Harrison streets in Vincennes. For more information, call 812-385-2534.
