Folk-rockers The Ragbirds to make appearance at Verve

TERRE HAUTE — Folk-rockers The Ragbirds picked a fitting moment to release their new live album, “We Belong to the Love.”

Valentine’s Day.

With that 12-song disc fresh off the presses, the band will perform at 10 p.m. March 1 at The Verve, at 677 Wabash Ave., in Terre Haute. The cover charge is $7, or $5 for students with an ID. (Must be 21 to enter.)

The new album follows seven years of touring and recording, including 150 shows to capacity crowds a year. “We Belong to the Love” was recorded over two nights in September 2012 at rowdy shows in Grand Rapids, Mich., at The Pyramid Scheme and favorite hometown hangout The Blind Pig in Ann Arbor.

“We Belong to the Love” also gives fans an early sneak peak at two unreleased new tracks, “Lucky Rhythm” and the album’s title track.

“In all of our studio recordings we have been trying to capture our live sound because it’s in the electric joyful exchange between the stage and the audience that the real magic happens,” said lead vocalist and songwriter Erin Zindle. “I’m so excited to be able to release a record that truly represents that live musical experience.”

As the band’s news release states, its sound features “hook-laden pop with a kaleidoscopic array of worldly influences,” adding, “The Ragbirds exhibit a gleeful disregard for contemporary folk-rock convention. The five-piece project is clearly built around the multi-talented Zindle, who is not only the singer and songwriter, but is proficient in a variety of stringed instruments. This classically trained violinist can aptly pluck the eight-stringed mandolin, wield a wild accordion, and rock the banjo while maintaining lead vocals. Surrounding Zindle’s earthy-sweet voice is the whirlwind of guitarist T.J. Zindle, dynamic bassist Brian Crist, drummer Loren Kranz, and standout percussionist Randall Moore.”

In January 2012, the band released its fourth studio record, “Travelin’ Machine,” followed by a three-month national tour, including its debut South By Southwest Festival appearance, a gig at the Sustainable Touring TED talk at TEDx Grand Rapids, a return to the CMJ showcase in New York City, and a number of national festival appearances.  USA Today labeled The Ragbirds “highly impressive.”
