Holiday extravaganza coming to Red Skelton Performing Arts Center

VINCENNES, Ind. — A holiday extravaganza is coming Dec. 1 to Vincennes University’s Red Skelton Performing Arts Center.

Tickets for the general public are on sale now for the “Festival of Trees with Silver Bells and Diamonds,” an evening sponsored by the Red Skelton Museum Foundation with proceeds going to Red Skelton Museum of American Comedy.

“This is our inaugural holiday event to benefit Red Skelton Museum of American Comedy. We are so excited to bring the Diamonds back to Vincennes to perform. We sold more than 90 tickets on our initial day of sales — more than 10 percent of the available tickets. That certainly indicates strong interest,” said Anne Pratt, director of marketing and development for the Museum.

The evening will begin at 6 p.m. in the foyer of the Skelton Center, which will have been transformed with beautifully decorated Christmas trees. Guests may make silent bids on the trees, donated by local organizations, while enjoying appetizers and drinks.

Guests will then be invited to the theater to listen to the timeless sounds of the Diamonds, a Canadian vocal quartet that rose to prominence in the 1950s and early 1960s with 16 Billboard hit records. During intermission, guests will be treated to desserts in the foyer, providing an opportunity to make final silent bids on the Christmas trees. The Diamonds’ performance will conclude with holiday favorites.

Reserved tickets cost $40 and can be purchased at VU’s Dayson Foundation and Alumni Center at Third and College streets, or by calling 812-888-2105.

With a scheduled opening in 2013, the 100th anniversary of Red Skelton’s birth in Vincennes, planning continues for the Red Skelton Museum of American Comedy, located adjacent to the Red Skelton Performing Arts Center. According to the designer, the museum will create “an environment that encourages interplay between visitors and resident performers, and that engages visitors on multiple levels through participatory exhibits that may incorporate a variety of methods for communicating themes and messages — from immersive environments, multimedia presentations and interactive opportunities to sound and film.”
