Bluegrass band Town Mountain to perform at The Woods

TERRE HAUTE — Thanks to their relatable, unforgettable lyrics, along with their impressive stage presence and swagger, Town Mountain manages to rise above many of the bluegrass bands touring today. The band will perform its distinctive sound at at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23 in Cecilian Auditorium during St. Mary-of-the-Woods College’s Four-Star Series. The performance is free and open to the public.

Town Mountain recently released its fourth album, Leave the Bottle. On the album, the band presents 11 original band-member written tunes and one cover. The repertoire showcases the band’s unique harmonic sounds of surf-rock, gospel and honky-tonk country. The title track, “Leave the Bottle,” was written by band member Jesse Langlais about being away from home, family and friends and, more importantly, being away from the one you love for long periods of time while on the road.

“Often times you’ll find solace in the strangest places,” explained Langlais. “This situation finds it in the bottom of the bottle, a very real situation for lots of musicians.”

Banding together in 2005, Town Mountain is Phil Barker on mandolin and vocals, Robert Greer on lead vocals and guitar, Langlais on banjo and vocals, Bobby Britt on fiddle, and Jon Stickley rounding them out with his steady bass and rock-solid guitar and vocals.

Town Mountain has collaborated and/or performed with Doc Watson, Jim Lauderdale, Steep Canyon Rangers, Acoustic Syndicate, Keller Williams, Larry Keel, David Grisman and The Infamous Stringdusters. The band expanded its reach as teachers, making its first international trip to Finland in the spring of 2012 and holding court at workshops in Canada as well as in many U.S. cities. The prestigious International Bluegrass Music Association has twice selected Barker for its songwriting showcase (2010 and 2011), and the band was part of the official showcase in 2011.

The Four-Star Series at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College offers a diverse spectrum of performing arts and esteemed speakers who inspire, challenge and stimulate the imagination.
