ISU School of Music to present Fall Choral Showcase on Friday

TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana State University School of Music will present its Fall Choral Showcase Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the University Hall Theater.

The concert will feature three choral ensembles.

The Concert Choir, under the direction of Scott Buchanan, will perform a diverse program of exciting numbers that are both sacred and secular in nature.

Composers include Israel Kagaruki, Brian Tate, Michael McCarthy, Dan Davison and Sydney Guillaume. Curt Pennington will serve as accompanist.

“This is going to be an exciting program, from the standpoint of diversity,” Buchanan said.

“The Concert Choir, alone, is performing in four different languages. There are a few pieces, as well, that have some very challenging rhythmic components. I think the audience will enjoy the variety of selections being presented,”  Buchanan said.

The Women’s Choir, under the direction of Colleen Davis, will perform works by Henry Purcell, Johannes Brahms and a collection of contemporary composers. Andrea Marlowe serves as the accompanist for the ensemble, and a variety of instrumentalists will be featured.

The Sycamore Singers will open the concert with collection of vocal jazz charts by some of today’s better-known arrangers.

“We have the Beatles, Johnny Mercer, musical theater (Stephen Sondheim) and the great Agent 007, James Bond … all represented in the opening portion of the concert,” Buchanan added.

Buchanan also conducts the Sycamore Singers, and Pennington is their accompanist.

The concert is free and open to the public. For more information call 812-237-4590.
