‘Mistakes Were Made’ premieres Friday at Charleston Alley Theatre

CHARLESTON, Ill. — The Charleston Alley Theatre will open its 23rd season at 7:30 p.m. on Friday with Craig Wright’s absurdist comedy, “Mistakes Were Made.”

Other play dates are March 16, 17, 22, 23, 24 at 7:30 EDT and March 18 and 25 at 2 p.m. EDT

The Charleston Alley Theatre is a small, intimate theater located just off the Square in Charleston, Ill., across from the Will Rogers movie theater — and down the alley.

Reservations, which are recommended, can be made by calling 217-345-2287 and leaving a message. Tickets will also be available for all performances from one hour before curtain until curtain time.

The action in “Mistakes were Made” mostly takes place on a multitude of telephone lines. Duke Bagger stars as Felix Artifex, an exhausted, fast-talking, second-class theatrical producer. Felix gets in way over his head when he takes on an epic about the French Revolution. Through his wheedling and needling, he meets all challenges. However, Felix is seemingly unaware of the world crashing down around him. His “office mate” and sounding board is a hapless fish, created by Jeffrey Augenstein, puppet master.

Felix’s perky secretary, played by Jacquelyn Armstrong, is a grinding voice on the speakerphone. She shouts out the news that another call has come through, or another caller has hung up.

Bagger creates a character study of Felix and brings to front stage warped priorities, artistic compromise and the hunger for success.

Wright is an American playwright and Emmy-nominated television writer. At the early start of his career, Craig Wright’s play, “Molly’s Delicious” was produced at the Charleston Alley Theatre and directed by its founder, Tanya Wood. His latest play, “Grace,” was recently showcased as one of TIME Magazine’s top 10 dramas for 2012.

Tickets are $10. The Charleston Alley Theatre is handicapped accessible.
