Children’s Theatre of Terre Haute to bring Twain’s classic story to life

TERRE HAUTE — Children’s Theatre of Terre Haute Inc. will bring Mark Twain’s classic story to musical life in a Broadway adaptation of America’s favorite book.

The production will be presented on March 8, 9, and 10 at Harmony Hall, 1257 Lafayette Ave. Show times are 7 p.m. March 8, with matinees at 3 p.m. March 9 and 10.

“The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” is the story of a 14-year-old boy growing up in the heartland of America. This musical adaptation of Twain’s immortal novel is set in 1840 in St. Petersburg, Mo., a bustling town on the banks of the Mississippi River.

In the course of the story, Tom matches wits with his stern Aunt Polly; falls in love with the beautiful, feisty Becky Thatcher; and goes on the adventure of his life with Becky and that irresistible renegade, Huckleberry Finn. Along the way we meet a terrifying villain named Injun Joe, Tom’s bratty half-brother, Sid, and all the other boys and girls in the village.

Dixie Brown, director, and Wanda Sanders, choreographer, have been working with youth representing a broad spectrum of the Wabash Valley, from elementary age to senior high, to present this memorable tale.

As the musical unfolds, we share with Tom and his friends all of the rollicking and heart-stopping adventures that we find in Twain’s masterpiece, whether it’s Tom tricking his friends into white-washing the fence, crossing swords with a schoolmaster, or getting lost in McDougal’s Cave.

Filled with foot-stomping, toe-tapping songs, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” is a tale of thrilling escapes, comedy and inspiration for the whole family.

This production is part of the 2013 Year of the River and the Big Read. The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.
