MARSHALL, Ill. —
Marshall Public Library invites the public to join a nation of readers by taking part in The Big Read throughout March.
Programs, book discussions and displays at the library will revolve around this year’s selected book, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” by Mark Twain. Free copies of the book will be available.
The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. Vigo County Public Library invited Marshall and other area libraries to participate in its grant.
In “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” humor, trouble and adventure follow Tom Sawyer everywhere: from the banks of the Mississippi to the brink of death and back, in Mark Twain’s first full novel.
The library has planned an original reader’s theater play called, “Sawyerland,” by Lucinda Berry for 6:30 p.m. on March 7. Local actors will reveal a scenario that might have happened after the days of Tom Sawyer. Patrons can also register for a portrayal of the author by scholar/actor Warren Brown, “Catch the Twain,” at 6:30 p.m. on March 14.
Two book discussions will take place with volunteer Paula Ross at “Coffee Chat” at 10:15 a.m. on March 20, and with head librarian Alissa Tipton at 6:30 p.m. on March 25 at the MPL book club meeting.
And Disney’s “Tom and Huck” will be shown on the library’s big screen at 2 p.m. March 26 (during Spring break). Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Brad Renfro star as the legendary troublemakers in Hannibal, Miss., in this PG-rated film.
