TERRE HAUTE —
A “Sweetheart Dance” with music by the Fabulous ’40s Big Band is set for Feb. 16 in Krietenstein American Legion Post 104 at 2690 Fort Harrison Road in Terre Haute.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and food service begins at 7, with the dance from 8 to 11 p.m. Cost is $25 per couple or $15 per single and includes food and admission to the dance. A cash bar also will be available.
Commander James T. Roberts said the post also will offer a buffet supper of sandwiches, potato salad, slaw and a relish tray.
Desserts will be provided by Post 104 Ladies Auxiliary. Both the dance and meal are open to the community in a smoke-free environment.
The Fabulous ’40s Big Band, led by lead trombone player Norman Hanson and managed by trumpet player Jim Chesterson, keeps the sound of the big band-era alive and vibrant in the Wabash Valley by playing the songs and tunes identified with the prominent bands that played across America in the 1930s and 1940s.
Dancers can expect both slow ballads and faster swing music from the “Great American Songbook,” the uniquely American collection of popular music from Broadway and Hollywood musicals prevalent from the 1920s to 1960s.
Familiar composers of these American standards include George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen and Richard Rodgers. Singers include Frank Sinatra, Al Jolson, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Judy Garland, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald and Mel Torme.
