ISU Permanent Art Collection to bring ‘Rivers to Oceans’ to Swope

TERRE HAUTE — In celebration of Terre Haute’s 2013 Year of the River, Barbara Räcker from Indiana State University Permanent Art Collection has curated the exhibition “Rivers to Oceans: Selections from Indiana State University’s Permanent Art Collection” for the Swope Art Museum.

Räcker will conduct two tours of the exhibition on Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. and again at 8 p.m. The exhibition is on display from Feb. 1 to March 9.

“Rivers to Oceans” spans 125 years, with artwork dating from 1888 to 2012. Although primarily American works, several prints and a painting were created by European and Asian artists. Among the artists are Stuart Davis, Homer Davisson, Aisong Jiang, René Magritte, John Singer Sargent and Dox Thrash.

The exhibition includes 51 works of art, mostly paintings and prints, of natural bodies of water and the commerce, wildlife and recreational activity they attract.

The exhibition is divided into four thematic sections: Water, Land and Wildlife; Commerce; Recreation; and Social Commentary. Many paintings and prints are waterscapes with little or no evidence of civilization. Several works depict area scenery.

Other works focus on life in waterfront towns rather than the nearby ocean or river.

Sixteen prints, two drawings and two paintings are from Indiana State’s Works Progress Administration collection.

Artists produced WPA artwork under the Federal Art Project between 1935 and 1943. Many WPA works, including several in the exhibition, focus on social commentary.

Fishing towns and boats, fish stands and wharfs are among the images depicting commerce. Sailboats, recreational fishing scenes and a rare tintype can be found in the recreation section of the exhibition.

Admission is free. The Swope Art Museum is at 25 S. Seventh St. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday; the museum is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
