Sisters of Providence Youth Art Contest now accepting entries

TERRE HAUTE — Young artists of the Wabash Valley are invited to flourish their paint brushes, sharpen their colored pencils and pull out their crayons and markers. The Sisters of Providence of St. Mary-of-the-Woods are now accepting submissions for their 7th annual Sisters of Providence Youth Art Contest.

Youth ages 5-18 may submit an artwork created based on the theme “Journey with a Saint.” The artwork should highlight St. Mother Theodore Guerin’s travels from France to America to establish the Sisters of Providence. Guerin traveled by steamship, canal, railroad, stagecoach — and had some exciting experiences in the process. Participants can use their imagination to depict a moment in time or part of her journey as they learn more about transportation and St. Guerin at www.SistersofProvidence.org.

The deadline for submissions is 4:30 p.m. March 5. Entries may be submitted to the Providence Spirituality and Conference Center Reception Desk at St. Mary-of-the-Woods from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, or from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Artists must reside in Vigo, Clay, Sullivan, Parke and Vermillion counties in Indiana or Clark, Edgar and Crawford counties in Illinois. Only one entry per artist will be accepted.

Top winners in each of the four age divisions (5-7, 8-10, 11-13 and 14-18) will receive cash prizes, ribbons and certificates. Each young artist who enters the contest will receive a participant ribbon and certificate.

Artwork must be original, created in 2013 and no larger than 11-by-17 inches. It must be a “flat” piece of artwork that is mounted on foam board or cardboard and is ready for display. The entry form must be attached to the back of the artwork.

A reception for all who enter is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. March 14 in the O’Shaughnessy Dining Room at Providence Spirituality and Conference Center.

“It has turned out just to be fun,” said Sister of Providence General Superior Sister Denise Wilkinson of the yearly art competition. “The evening exhibit where the community comes out and the artists are recognized is one of my favorite things we do all year. I hope participants take away a sense of being a part of St. Mary-of-the-Woods and a part of the Sisters of Providence. And I hope they know they are welcome to return here and welcome to be a part of all that’s out here.”

The theme for this year’s contest was chosen with the 2013 Year of the River focus. Guerin’s final stretch of journey to arrive at St. Mary-of-the-Woods was an eventful trip over a flooded Wabash River. This is just one of her many travel experiences young artists may draw on for inspiration.
