College to host bands on Jazz Day

ROBINSON, ILL. — Trumpeter and composer Doug Beach, the Elmhurst College Jazz Band and the Lincoln Trail College Jazz Band will perform at 7 p.m. today as part of LTC’s annual Jazz Day festivities in Robinson, Ill.

Beach is a performer, publisher, arranger and educator. He currently serves as the director of the Elmhurst College Jazz Band and the director of jazz studies. His company, Doug Beach Music, is a leading publisher of educational jazz music.

Beach has won awards for composition from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. And in 1996, the Count Basie Orchestra and New York Voices recorded his arrangement of “Cottontail” on a CD that went on to win the Grammy Award for best large jazz ensemble.

The 19-piece Elmhurst College Jazz Band has toured 17 nations and twice been honored with invitations from the U.S. State Department to tour Europe. Performances with well-known guests artists are a staple to the band’s schedule. Recent artists have included: Bobby Shew, Louie Bellson, Pete Christlieb, Conte Candoli, Diane Schuur, Terry Gibbs, Denis DiBlasio, Chris Vadala and Frank Mantooth. The group also participates in a number of jazz festivals nationwide.

Prior to the evening concert, Beach and the Elmhurst Jazz Band will conduct master classes and a clinic for select area high school and college band students.

General admission concert tickets, available at the door, are $8 per adult and $4 per student. For more information, call 618-544-8657, ext. 1433.
