Maryland Church worship band releasing new album

TERRE HAUTE — The voices on a new album from Terre Haute musicians aren’t limited to members of the band.

The worship band at Maryland Community Church recorded its new CD, “Spirit Would You Come,” live at the southside facility. The response of the congregation gathered for the performance proved central to the project, said Justin Hoeppner, MCC pastor of worship arts.

“One of the most powerful things to witness is the worship response of the worshipping community that gathers on Sundays,” Hoeppner said. “The sound of the voices in response to God is overwhelming. When we decided to record a live worship record, it was essential to capture the environment and the voice of the worshipping community.”

The CD will be released Sunday at the church during its 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. services. The disc will also be available online through iTunes later this month. The cost is $10 per copy.

Hoeppner, vocalist and guitarist, wrote two of the album’s songs — the title track and “None Like You.” Hoeppner — a singer-songwriter who also worked as a studio musician in the Los Angeles region of his home state of California before moving his family to Terre Haute more than three years ago — penned “None Like You” nearly a decade ago while preparing to lead a session at a national worship leaders conference. “The song came out of a season where it was very clear to me that God was unequaled and unparalleled, but, he interacts and has relationship with us,” Hoeppner said.

He wrote the song “Spirit Would You Come” on stage at MCC last year, and it’s been part of the band’s repertoire ever since. “In the song, there’s an expectancy that is littered throughout, that matches the expectancy I was feeling during the season in our worship as a church,” Hoeppner explained.

Local listeners of the album “The Wabash” — a fundraiser released in December for the Art Spaces of the Wabash Valley’s Paul Dresser sculpture project — will recognize Hoeppner as the artist performing the state song and opening track, “On the Banks of the Wabash (Far Away).”

On the new MCC “Spirit Would You Come” album, Hoeppner is joined by vocalist Becky Price, bassist Brian Price, drummer Aaron York, guitarist Michael Bates and keyboardist Eric Louk.

“We wanted to represent what takes place at MCC every week,” Hoeppner said. “This CD is our first step in what will be many more strides toward getting more worship out there.”
