Cellist Altino to highlight Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra concert Saturday

TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra is scheduled to perform at Indiana State University’s Tilson Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The performance is to be preceded by “Concert Conversations with David Bowden” at 6:45 p.m.

The concert will feature John Keltonic’s “Our Wings Have Caught the Wind,” Amy Beach’s “Gaelic Symphony” and Dvorák’s “Cello Concerto,” performed by internationally renowned cellist Leonardo Altino.

Keltonic’s piece is inspired by the phrase “our wings have caught the wind,” taken from remarks made by Lech Walesa while accepting the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983.

Beach was the first American woman to achieve success as a composer. During much of her life (1867-1944), she was the most famous American classical composer in the world.

Altino will perform the “Cello Concerto,” the last work Antonín Dvorák composed during his three-year stay in the U.S. Altino, a native of Brazil, began to play the cello at age 6. He has performed with many orchestras in the United States and abroad, including the Boston Symphony. Altino holds degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

For tickets, visit www.hulmancenter.org or www.ticketmaster.com, or call 800-745-3000. Prices begin at $19 for adults and $5 for kindergarten to college age.

Free “Family Time” concerts for children are scheduled for 2 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday during the dress rehearsal in Tilson Auditorium. No tickets or reservations are required.

The “Supper at the Symphony” dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. in Tilson’s Heritage Ballroom. To reserve seats, visit www.thso.org, call 812-242-8476, or mailing a check to THSA, 25 N. Sixth St., Terre Haute, IN 47807.

Established in 1926, the Terre Haute Symphony is the oldest professional orchestra in Indiana. Each year, THSO offers the community five concerts in many different styles.
