Vigo County Library’s 2013 Big Read to support Year of the River theme

TERRE HAUTE — The Vigo County Public Library recently received a National Endowment for the Arts grant to present its 2013 Big Read.

To support the community’s 2013 The Year of the River theme, The Big Read selection is “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” by Mark Twain. Not only does Tom Sawyer take place in the Mississippi River town of St. Petersburg, but Twain himself was a riverboat pilot before he became an author.

Book discussions and programs are now being planned, and book clubs, libraries, schools or other organizations interested in participating should contact the Community Services Department of the library at 812-232-1116. A preview of Big Read public events will be posted on the library website (www.vigo.lib.in.us) beginning this month. Most events will take place in March.

The Big Read is part of a year-long celebration of the Wabash River coordinated by Art Spaces, Arts Illiana and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The library Brown Bag on Jan. 17 will kick-off the 2013 The Year of the River celebration, and Big Read brochures will be available at that time.

Representatives from Arts Illiana, Rose-Human and Art Spaces will be on hand to present their new Year of the River website, review exciting programs (like The Big Read) and introduce a special kiosk available for groups to use.

The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.
