Laissez les bon temps roulez at Swope Mardi Gras

Let the good times roll at Big Easy revelry set for Feb. 9

TERRE HAUTE — Warm up with a night of Big Easy revelry and celebrate Mardi Gras at the Swope Art Museum from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday. The museum is hosting its fourth annual Mardi Gras, an evening of fun, festivities and frolicking on the museum’s third floor at 25 S. Seventh St.

Party-goers will dance to music provided by DJ Apollo, enjoy Cajun and Creole food from J. Gumbo’s as well as hurricanes, a specialty of the Crescent City, and other libations and treats. Everyone will receive complimentary carnival beads and masks for a memorable party, New Orleans-style.

Also on hand will be fortune tellers and a commemorative photo booth courtesy of The Roxy Studio. Following tradition, attendees will elect the king and queen of Mardi Gras before the night is through. This year’s candidates are Yvette Hernandez, Candi Snyder and Whitney Völkl. Candidates for king are Gary Greiner, Brent Wells and John Wilkinson. The king and queen are elected in part through attendees’ votes and in part through raising the most money for the Swope. Last year the event raised more than $40,000.

Tickets are $30 for members and $35 for non-members and are available in advance from the king and queen candidates and at the museum. The event is one of the museum’s most important annual fundraisers. A limited number of tickets may be available at the door. For more information call (812) 238-1676.

The Swope Mardi Gras is organized by the Art Hoppers, a group of young professionals dedicated to supporting the museum. It is one of many events and programs the Swope offers to residents of the Wabash Valley. The museum has brought the finest examples of American art and related educational programs to residents of Terre Haute, the Wabash Valley and visitors nationwide for more than 70 years.

The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m Tuesday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays. Admission is free.
